November 2, 2008—On Tuesday, October 28 we had a special collaborative performance at Monkey Town in Brooklyn. I performed with the gorgeous visual accompaniment of Luminous Playhouse, the photo project by my wife Anne Garland. We premiered a short film for my song “Diorama” directed, shot, and edited by Amber Benson and Adam Busch, who were there, along with Adam’s band Common Rotation. They joined me for my songs Every Bird and Obama Nation (which you can download here for free, or listen on MySpace). And I joined them on clarinet, flute, and backing vocals for a few of their songs while they showed slides of their mid-winter trip to Alaska. My son Kenji Garland provided wild video processing for two songs. We had a great time. Here are pics and more info …

October 1, 2008—Here’s advance notice about an an unusual collaborative concert I have coming up on Tuesday, October 28. Visuals—film and slides as well as live processing—are an important part of the concert, taking place in the great little Williamsburg venue MonkeyTown, where performers and audience are surrounded by four projection screens.

It’s been a pleasure over the past year to get to know Amber Benson and Adam Busch, who previously I’d only known from TV (both were regulars on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). They’re not only actors, filmmakers, and musicians, but they’re also quixotically creative enough to collaborate with an experimental songwriter like me. They’ll participate in this performance, which also features my first visual/musical collaboration with my wife Anne Garland and her photo project Luminous Playhouse.

This unusual east/west coast collaboration presents thoughtful, scintillating songs and immersive, vibrant visuals, including the premier of a music video for my song “Diorama,” conceived, directed and edited by Amber Benson and Adam Busch.

Anne Garland’s “Luminous Playhouse Theater Company” photos (see them here and here) of magnified, emotionally rich scenes will be projected onto MonkeyTown’s four surrounding screens as I sing, accompanying myself on 12-string guitar, with interludes of clarinet and flute, and a one-man trio for voice, shruti box, and flexible funnel. We’ll even be joined by our son Kenji, who will contribute some of his wildly colorful live video processing. Amber and Adam will add their singing voices to some of my songs.

Common Rotation

Adam’s L.A.-based band of former New Yorkers, Common Rotation, will perform a set of their melodious, enjoyable songs and gorgeous harmonies. The band features the voice and guitar of chief songwriter Eric Kufs; the trumpet, flugelhorn, and banjo of Jordan Katz; and vocals and sundries by Adam Busch.

Contributing colorful, malleable video processing to both acts will be Kenji Garland and camera operator Aurora Cobb, utilizing a processing program Kenji designed.
