what’s new

May 7, 2008—I have two concerts coming up in Brooklyn in May, and the first will be 8 pm on Saturday, May 17th at Union Pool.

Golden Ghost and Viking Moses

I’ve been invited to share the bill with my friends Viking Moses and Golden Ghost (at left). Brendon Massei (Viking Moses) and Laura Goetz (Golden Ghost) are wonderful, soulful, unusual songwriters whose music and performances I recommend very enthusiastically. If you’re at all inclined to hear me play my music, this is the show to attend! Union Pool is a great Williamsburg venue at 484 Union Avenue on the corner of Union & Meeker (more details). Pass through the bar and courtyard and enter the little building that features a nice old-fashioned proscenium stage. The music of Golden Ghost is also featured in an in-studio performance on Spinning On Air, Sunday, May 11th, on WNYC-FM 93.9 and wnyc.org.

Later in May, on Wednesday the 28th, I’ll open for guitarist Eyal Maoz at Black Betty, 366 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Amber Benson and Adam Busch

Amber Benson and Adam Busch returned a few weeks ago to shoot some more footage for the short film they’re making to go with my song “Diorama” (see previous entry).

I now have a Weekend Evening Music Blog at wnyc.org. It’s proven to be a fun way to get to know the Evening Music listener community.

March 19, 2008—A couple of wonderful, multi-talented people have quixotically decided to create a song-length film for my song “Diorama,” from my album “Noise In You.”

Amber Benson and Adam Busch

Amber Benson and Adam Busch are both best known as actors. Adam’s also a singer and musician; his band Common Rotation has appeared on Spinning On Air. Amber has written, directed, and appeared in two feature films, has written novels and comics, and sings, too.

They proposed an imaginative idea for the video, and we had a blast last Friday filming it. After a slight delay caused by, of all things, the President’s motorcade on our block, Amber and Adam arrived and dove into filming, bringing joy and spontaneity to their collaboration together and with us. By us, I mean me and my wife Anne Garland, whose project The Luminous Playhouse Theater Company is a crucial inspiration and source of imagery for the film. Brendon Massei (Viking Moses) and Kenji Garland, who both perform on my album, also participated—as did Laura Goetz (Golden Ghost) and Aurora Cobb. Now the project will brew for a while in Amber’s editing computer...

David Garland at Barbes

Last week I played an unamplified concert of my songs at Barbes in Brooklyn. Yes, it was fun. Here’s a photo taken by my son Kenji.
